Dear Families: “The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.” –Harriet Ann Jacobs The most beautiful things emerge in spring. From the first tiny crocus splitting the earth with a burst of violet ... to the first tiny beak breaking through a blue robin’s egg … to the first budding leaves unfurling from the Okame Cherry trees. It’s a time that begs for renewal and growth, and it is lovely. The same beautiful renewal is happening in our TQS hallways. Fresh off a rejuvenating spring break, students are reinvigorated and happy to be back learning in our classrooms. And new faces are emerging every day. A few TQS students who have been HyFlex are now returning to full-time, in-person instruction. As enjoyable and effective as their online instruction has been, their daily interactions with beloved teachers and classmates are even more special, and it is a joy to welcome them home. One of these girls showed up at my office door on Monday morning. She hasn’t been in the building since last February, so I was thrilled to see her. But then I noticed she was crying. When I asked her why, she responded: “I just wanted to show you I was back.” Well, I think I may have started crying myself. Out of respect for COVID rules, no hugs or handshakes were exchanged, but the interaction was still joyous — as were the others like it this week. As you know, TQS has made a commitment to offering HyFlex learning for the entirety of the current school year, and we will continue to honor that commitment. (Just as we will continue to keep distancing requirements at 6 feet rather than the adjusted 3 feet, despite the changed CDC guidelines. With Montgomery County back in the Substantial Transmission Zone, we want to remain diligent with all health and safety standards.) At some point in the 2021-2022 school year, we will return to 100% in-person learning — but that is for next year. For this year, if spring feels like a time of renewal to you, I want you to know that we are ready to welcome your child back to in-person learning. However, if you are still concerned about your child coming to school in person each day, wait and use the HyFlex option. Whatever you choose, TQS is here for you. One thing I cannot promise, however, is that I won’t cry when you get back. Shine on, Alex |
