Dear Families,
"Walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone."
– George Fox
As I walk the warm and inviting halls of our wonderful school, I am often reminded of the rich tapestry of Quaker values and teachings that form the bedrock of our esteemed institution.
I find it amazing that, regardless of when first spoken, the words of Quaker teachers and philosophers continue to echo in our classrooms and our hearts, guiding us to foster a nurturing community founded on morality and unwavering care.
The quote above by George Fox, a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, certainly captures the essence of our mission at The Quaker School: seeing and celebrating the unique gifts within each child. Recognizing 'that of God' in every individual resonates deeply with our commitment to cherishing each student's individuality and potential.
Fox’s words remain meaningful today, as do those of other pillars of Quaker thought … teachers like John Woolman, whose words "Love was the first motion" stress the simplicity yet profundity of starting all actions, big or small, from a place of love.
Every decision we make at The Quaker School, every program we implement, and every lesson we teach stems from this foundation of love, aiming to foster a genuine sense of belonging and interconnectedness among our students.
Likewise, the sage insights of Margaret Fell, who once stated, "We are a people that follow after those things that make for peace, love, and unity." This sentiment reminds us of our school's ethos: to uphold the values of community and solidarity.
In each child, faculty, and staff member, there is an innate capability to bring about change, love, and unity. It is our collective responsibility to nurture these abilities, ensuring that our students thrive not only academically but also morally.
And of course, teachers like our founders, George Rowe and Beverly Morgan. Their love for Quakerism, their belief in the power of education, and their dedication to each student's success are the pillars on which our institution stands. Their memories are a testament to the transformative impact a loving, supportive environment can have on young minds, especially those who face complex challenges.
As Head of School – as well as a parent, a relentless advocate for children with complex challenges, and an expert in independent school special education – I often reflect on the wisdom imparted by these prominent teachers.
Every day, as I witness the academic and personal growth of our students, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for our founders, gratitude for the wisdom of Quaker teachings, and most important, gratitude for our community that continually strives to uphold these teachings.
As you consider these teachings today, I hope that you feel the warm embrace of our tight-knit community. I encourage each of you to embed these philosophies in your daily interactions, ensuring that our beloved school remains a beacon of love, acceptance, and unity.
Shine On,
Alex
