End of Calendar Year Message

Dear TQS Families:

“We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.” — Robert Burns

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should old acquaintance be forgot,

And old lang syne?

A quick Google search informed me that this Scottish song, which we now closely associate with New Year’s Eve, was first written down in 1788 by Robert Burns, who claimed the words were taken “from an old man’s signing” about old friends recalling past adventures. (The words “auld lang syne” roughly translate to “since long ago” or “for old times’ sake.”)

What struck me about the lyrics to this song, however, was that they’re not only about reflecting on the past, but of using those past memories to spark happiness today and into the future.

We two have paddled in the stream,

From morning sun till dine;

But seas between us broad have roared

Since auld lang syne.

By acknowledging the beautiful times of the past, as well as the time that has passed since then, we’re able to come together in joy and friendship.

That’s what the end of the 2021 calendar year represents to me: a time to look back on the lovely moments we’ve shared, to sit and celebrate together, and to look ahead with collective anticipation.

Here at TQS, we have had a truly memorable year. From our school renovation; to the expansion of our Upper School; to our new school schedule, auxiliary services, and record enrollment, our TQS community has much to celebrate.

Most important, however, is that this year TQS students came together, and they grew, thrived, and blossomed socially, behaviorally, and academically. There were many moments of personal growth, of breakthroughs, and of friendships that we will all consider fondly for years to come.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!

And give me a hand o’ thine!

And we’ll take a right good-will draught,

For auld lang syne.

As I virtually reach out my hand to yours, I hope you can look back at this year with warmth and affection. I wish you and your family a wonderful winter break filled with both happy memories and best wishes for the year to come.

Shine on,
